Analysis of State Hospital Annual Patient Day Utilization, 1989
January 01, 1989
Completed in 1995
This paper presents the actual annual utilization of state mental hospital inpatient beds in terms of both numbers of patients and annual patient days in 1989. Data were from 12 states that reported to the Patient Longitudinal Database, designed under contract from the federal Center for Mental Health Services. The analysis was completed to examine the impact of a proposed national health reform benefit in the early 1990s. Results showed that forty-one percent of patients accumulated 30 days or less of state hospital care in FY 1989, representing 20.6 of all patient bed days.
