Summary of 2023–2025 NRI Behavioral Health Data Visualizations

NRI, in collaboration with a state advisory group, has developed a series of interactive data visualizations to enhance understanding of state-supported mental health service delivery. Drawing from State Profiles and publicly available data, these visualizations are accessible through NRI’s Restricted Access Website and are exclusively available to State Mental Health Authority (SMHA) and NASMHPD staff.

The 2023 Crisis Continuum Visualizations provide insights into key components of the behavioral health crisis system, including:

  • 988 and other Crisis Contact Centers: Number of programs, clients served, funding levels, and workforce details.

  • Mobile Crisis Services: State definitions, availability, dispatch methods, program count, clients served, and 24/7 statewide access.

  • Crisis Stabilization Centers: Availability, utilization, staffing, funding, and 24/7 operations across states.

The 2023 State Psychiatric Hospital Visualizations explore:

  • Number and type of state psychiatric hospitals, resident and admission statistics.

  • Types of services offered (acute, intermediate, long-term, forensic) by population (children, adults, older adults).

  • Detailed workforce data, including salary ranges and shortages across 13 roles, and initiatives aimed at workforce growth and retention.

The 2025 SMHA Expenditures/Revenues Visualizations analyze:

  • National trends and geographic distribution of SMHA spending (1981–2023).

  • Comparisons of mental health expenditures to overall state government spending (1997–2023).

  • State rankings and expenditure changes over time.

  • Spending breakdowns by category (e.g., community mental health, state hospitals).

  • Per capita spending adjustments across states and time periods.

Together, these visualizations provide a comprehensive view of the crisis response system, state psychiatric hospital infrastructure, and funding landscapes supporting mental health services nationwide.

NRI has just completed working with states to update the Crisis Service data in Profiles and during July and August will be updating the Crisis Services visualizations with 2024-2025 data.

The State Profiles Restricted Access site is available to State Mental Health Agency Staff. Please contact [email protected] if you have any questions.
