NRI-PQI to Offer Psychiatric Inpatient Experience Survey within the BHPMS

Thursday, September 11, 2025

The NRI Performance and Quality Improvement (NRI-PQI) Division is pleased to announce that the Psychiatric Inpatient Experience (PIX) Survey will be offered effective January 1, 2026, discharges for inpatient psychiatric facilities as a new option for reporting within their Behavioral Health Performance Measurement System (BHPMS). The survey will be mandatory in 2026 for inpatient psychiatric facilities that participate in the Inpatient Psychiatric Facility Quality Reporting (IPFQR) Program with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Inpatient psychiatric facilities that do not participate in the CMS IPFQR program, can also select the PIX Survey measures.

PIX survey includes 23 questions for patients aged 13 and older to be completed within 24 hours of discharge. The NRI’s version of the PIX Survey also includes demographic questions. The facility’s survey results will be publicly reported as five separate mean rates (Overall score, Treatment Team Relationship domain score, Environment domain score, Treatment Effectiveness domain score and Nursing Team Presence domain score).

By submitting your PIX Survey data to NRI-PQI you will have access to information about your facility’s current progress toward your goals including, number of surveys completed (CMS allows sampling for PIX with a minimum of 300 surveys annually), progress toward your goals for this measure and timely benchmarking with our other member facilities. NRI will provide a proxy response rate, enabling facilities to evaluate the extent of their population coverage and determine if adjustments are necessary. Facilities participating in the NRI’s PIX Survey measures may compare their mean rates against other facilities with similar bed size or population served, such as forensic.

NRI-PQI, helps inpatient psychiatric facilities drive better decisions with data they can trust. Our PIX survey includes color blindness emojis to assist in completion and when a facility chooses to use NRI’s PIX Survey electronic fillable form facilities can enjoy the ease of electronic submission.
