New NRI Profiles Report about State Mental Health Systems

Thursday, July 31, 2025

The National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors Research Institute (NRI) has released six in-depth public reports that provide a current snapshot of how state mental health agencies (SMHAs) operate, structure care, and respond to workforce and systems-level challenges. Along with the public reports, available at nri-inc.org/profiles/, state staff can access detailed supporting information for each state on the Profiles restricted access site. The State Profiles Project is an initiative funded and led by State Mental Health Agencies to produce actionable information on high priority topics identified by State Leaders

  • Agency Organization and Reorganization: Examines how SMHAs are structured within state governments, their oversight of disability services, hospital and community roles, and the effects of recent reorganizations.
  • Use of State Psychiatric Hospitals: Details the number of hospitals per state, admission rates, patient demographics, service priorities (e.g., youth, older adults, forensic), length of stay, and accreditation.
  • Crisis System Outcomes ReportOffers updated insights into how states are measuring behavioral health crisis system outcomes, including performance indicators, data infrastructure, and efforts to enhance care coordination. Links to state data dashboards for behavioral health crisis services are highlighted.
  • Crisis Continuum FrameworkThis report documents major growth in behavioral health crisis services since the launch of the 3-digit 988 system three years ago.  The report details the number of Crisis Contact Centers, Mobile Crisis Teams, and Crisis Stabilization programs, with information on the trend in number of individuals served, funding amounts and sources.
  • Mobile Crisis TeamsProfiles mobile crisis teams in states and territories, including service models, staffing, hours of operation, and integration with broader crisis care systems.

Additional new reports will be released over the next month. The State Profiles Restricted Access site is available to State Mental Health Agency Staff. Please contact [email protected] if you have any questions.
