New NRI 2025 Profiles Report about State Mental Health Systems

The first 4 new Profiles reports have completed their state review and are publicly available at www.nri-inc.org/profiles. Along with the public reports, state staff can access detailed supporting information for each state on the Profiles restricted access site. The State Profiles Project is an initiative funded and led by State Mental Health Agencies to produce actionable information on high priority topics identified by State Leaders.
The four public reports available online are:
- SMHA Expenditures and Funding FY2024: This report discusses over $61 billion being expended by State Mental Health Agency systems to support mental health services in FY 2024. The report explores total mental health expenditures, state psychiatric hospital and community expenditures and shows data by total dollars and per capita expenditures (expenditures divided by state population). The report also reviews major funding sources for total SMHA services, state psychiatric hospitals and community mental health expenditures. The report reviews change in SMHA expenditures and funding sources the since FY2001. In addition to this Public Report, the NRI’s state Profiles restricted access website includes data visualizations that SMHA staff can use to analyze their and other state’s funding data.
- SMHA Financing Crisis Services 2025: This report reviews over $3 billion being expended by SMHA systems to support behavioral health crisis services in FY 2024. The report reviews expenditure levels and funding sources for 988/Lifeline Contact Centers, (2) Other Crisis Contact Centers, (3) Mobile Crisis Services, (4) Crisis Stabilization Services, and (4) short-term Crisis Residential Services.
- SMHA Role in Implementing National Suicide Prevention Guidelines 2025: This report reviews State actions to implement recommendations from the 2024 National Suicide Prevention Guidelines. State-by-State information is available in the State Profiles restricted access website.
- BH Crisis Service Registries 2025: This report reviews the status of Behavioral Health Crisis Service and Bed Registries being implemented by states. The types of beds and crisis services included in Registries are depicted. State-by-state information is available in the State Profiles restricted access website about the Registry software being used and services/beds.
