2025 NRI Profiles – SMHA Expenditures/Revenues Data Visualization

NRI, in collaboration with a state advisory group, has created data visualizations to support understanding of State supported mental health service delivery. These visualizations use information from State Profiles and other publicly available data, and are housed on NRI’s Restricted Access Website. 

The 2025 SMHA Expenditures/Revenues provided by NRI are included in this resource but are exclusively available to State Mental Health Authority (SMHA) and NASMHPD staff.

These visualizations identify:

• Geographic distribution of state mental health agency (SMHA) expenditures across the U.S. via a national map
• Trends in SMHA spending between states from 1981 through 2023
• Comparisons of SMHA expenditures to other state government spending from 1997 through 2023
• Rankings of states based on total SMHA expenditures
• Changes in expenditures over time for selected timeframes
• Spending breakdowns by expenditure categories such as community mental health and state psychiatric hospitals
• Per capita spending differences adjusted for state population across states and time periods
